Event Details
Join us on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, for a hands-on volunteer day dedicated to preserving the history of the Sheepskin Trail and enhancing its amenities for future visitors. We’ll start the day at 10:00 AM with a presentation by Donna Myers, a board member of the Dunbar Historical Society, who will share insights about the historic Coke Ovens and the industrial heritage of Dunbar.
After the presentation, we will ride or walk back to the Coke Ovens and begin the graffiti removal process. Volunteers will use specialized Elephant Snot Graffiti removal products and pressure washers to restore the site. Please bring work gloves, eye protection, closed-toe shoes, and clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty.
Once the graffiti and litter have been removed from the Coke Oven sites, we will head back to the trailhead to install a new public bike workstation and bike pump, enhancing the Sheepskin Trail’s amenities for all who use it.
Around midday, we’ll take a break and enjoy pizza or sandwiches from a local shop to refuel before completing the installation and finishing up the day’s activities.
Social Ride (Weather Permitting):
After the work is done, experienced riders are invited to join us for a long social ride. We’ll ride 17 miles along the Sheepskin Trail, connecting to the GAP trail, all the way to Falls City Pub in Ohiopyle. There, we’ll enjoy some local beers and food before riding back to Dunbar, soaking in the beautiful fall colors along the way. This ride is recommended for experienced cyclists due to the distance and terrain.
Age Requirement:
This event is recommended for volunteers aged 16 and older due to the physical nature of the activities. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who will be responsible for their safety and participation. The social ride is recommended for experienced riders aged 16 and older.
This is a great opportunity to give back to the community, learn about local history, and make lasting improvements to one of our cherished trails. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or new to community service, your help is welcome and appreciated!
